DUTIES:
Work schedules - 700AM -400PM Monday - Friday (No night shifts - No weekend shifts required)

The Manchester VAMC is a Same Day Surgery Facility Only. Incumbent is assigned to the Outpatient and Surgical section of the Manchester VAMC under the direct supervision of the Chief of Surgery. Incumbent's duties will include a general mix of basic procedures in the operating room and procedure rooms. She/He will conduct elective general surgery referrals which can be treated locally or referred to tertiary VA Referral Centers (i.e. WRJ VAMC and Boston VAMC). The incumbent will perform outpatient and ambulatory surgical procedures. She/He will perform a variety of surgical procedures to include, but not limited to, Inguinal and Umbilical Hernia surgery, Rectal surgery (Hemorrhoid surgery, Rectal fissure and Abscess), skin biopsies, removal of skin lesions, simple skin grafting, Gynecomastia Surgery, Lymph Node Biopsies, Excision of Lipomas and placement of Porto Catch's. Also, treatment and care of lower extremity ulcerations. The incumbent will have a surgical RN assigned to provide assistance. Anesthesia in the Operating Room is provided by a CRNA.

Special consideration will be given to applicants that can perform colonoscopies.

NOTE: Manchester VAMC does not perform laparoscopic surgery.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
a. Citizenship . Citizen of the United States.

b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

c. Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Incumbent must be board eligible/board certified in internal medicine or family practice physician.

d. Certification. Must be board certified or eligible in General Surgery

e. Physical Requirements. Must pass a pre-employment physical.

f. English Language Proficiency. Physicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Salary determination will be based on a recommendation by the Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director. Applicant's education, length of practice and specialized experience will be considered by a Physician compensation panel in recommending salary of the applicant selected.

OTHER INFORMATION:
This position will be filled on a full-time permanent basis. Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.

This position is in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status. Grade and salary will be based on a recommendation by the Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.

VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
